Emlock Hive Strap with Poly Woven Strapping

An Emlock hive strap locks the bottom board, boxes and lid into one unit so the hive cannot come apart. This version uses a poly woven band in place of steel banding. The band is 14 ft, enough to wrap a three box hive, and the lock body and tensioning catch are galvanized.

Why pick the poly woven band over steel?

It is softer. Steel banding bites into soft woodenware under tension and will dent or crush the wall of a polystyrene hive, so beekeepers running EPS boxes use the poly band instead. It is UV treated, so unlike untreated webbing it can stay on the hive permanently rather than being fitted only for a move.

How do you fit it?

Watch our video above. Wrap the band around the hive from bottom board to lid, note the teeth on the lock body face outwards, then walk the tensioning catch along the teeth until tight and locked into place.

Frequently asked questions

Will it hold a lid on in wind?

Yes. That is the common reason to leave one fitted. It holds a migratory or telescoping lid down and stops boxes being shifted by stock, dogs or raccoons.

Can I use it on a polystyrene hive?

Yes, and that is what it is for. The poly band spreads the load across the box wall where steel banding would cut a line into it.

Poly band or steel?

The Emlock beehive banding strap uses galvanized steel banding and is the stiffer, harder wearing option for wooden hives that stay strapped. Pick the poly band for polystyrene boxes, for soft or painted woodenware, or where you open the hive often.

Is it reusable?

Yes. Back the catch off the teeth, reposition and re-tension as often as you need.
