A mating nuc lets you get a queen mated without standing down a production colony. Three mini frames and a few hundred bees are enough, where a full size nuc would cost you a box of foragers in the middle of the flow.
Polystyrene holds heat, which matters at this colony size. The front panel slides to set ventilation and shut the flight hole for moving, the floor panel lifts out so you can fill the hive with bees or introduce the mated queen, and a queen excluder across the feeder chamber stops them building comb in the syrup.
